TransTalamanca is an ancestral route of the Costa Rican natives that crosses the Talamanca Mountain Range from the Pacific side to reach the Atlantic side on the most beautiful and demanding hiking route in Costa Rica.

  • 2 groups per month.

What to Expect

– Hike 8 hours a day from 6am to 2 or 3pm.  

– The kilometers vary but we hike an average of 8 km per day.  

– The camps side are strategic places located near the water.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive and first hike

San José -Ujarrás de Buenos Aires 5 hours.

This day we hit the trailhead at 3am, we will begin our ascent from 700 meters above sea level passing through tropical savannahs until we reach 2400 meters and cross the continental divide to enter the tropical cloud forest.

Day 2 - Ujarrás- First camp area Lori

Approximately 11 hours of hiking.

Hardest Day

Day 3 - Lori-Coen

In distance it is not much but very difficult, in the majority passed over small rivers with a lot of up and down to get to the camp.

Approximately 6 to 8 hours of hiking.

Day 4 - Coen - Lari.

Same as the day before.  It’s a lot of technique.  At the beginning you have to cross the Coen River with quite a flow, you hike the same for approximately 8 hours.

Day 5 - Lari - Dapali.

On this day we are already at a height of around 1900 meters above sea level.  You begin to go down a row looking for Talamanca.  The Bugu row.  With different type of forest.  With another climate and low altitude.  You walk all day until you reach the Dapali camp side.

Approximately 6 to 8 hours of hiking.

Day 6 - Dapali - Coen.Day 6 - Dapali - Coen.

On this day with different type of ecosystem.  Low mountains.  With a lot of slope, go up and down.  It runs along the Coen River.  Until you reach a certain part suitable for setting up shops, It would be the last night in the mountains.

Approximately 6 to 8 hours of hiking.

Day 7 - Coen - GandocaDay 7 - Coen - Gandoca

On this last day we finish walking along the banks of the Coen River.  With very long distance, crossing rivers, bridges to finally reach the town, off Sepecue where we will take a boat to Sepecue, We arrived at the place where the transportation awaits us to take us to Gandoca.

For the next day look for the return to San José.

Day 8 - Coen - GandocaDay 8 - Chill Day

This day is free, we can enjoy peacefully in the beautiful town of Gandoca where we will rest and have the opportunity to walk on the beach or simply relax in nature.

Gandoca Drop off in Sixaola, Puerto Viejo, Cahuita or San José
